PROCESS

Concept:

as stated in the proposal the book is an autobiographical representation of the polyphonic states of one's self through the experiences of memories and the function of time through past, present and future. Themes such as transparency, layering and delicacy were used to depict how a multitude of memories or selves coexist within a person's being. Through the exploration of my own past, concepts such as mourning, mortality, meeting and heritage are explored. Symbols representative of traditional vietnamese funerals and alters are referenced through out along with other self referential symbols / imagery. 

Layout:

The book is divided into 5 chapters each accompanied with a portion of the poem and a rice imagery. chronology plays an important role in the ordering of pages and correlates with the passage of time. 

Material:

The large pages of the book uses vellum and the cover and smaller inside pages uses a combination of Japanese papers.

 

Binding:

single page binding similar to coptic stitch binding was used to allow flexibility when ordering pages while still allowing the book to lay flat. However, it is extremely time consuming as each page must be stitched individually 

Typeface:

Andale mono for the english text and Superclarendon for vietnamese texts.

format:

the size of the book is 7.5"x10.5" because I wanted everything to be easily printed within a letter sized sheet.
